To compare the dashcams “Resolution”, experiment was made. The regular car number plate was placed at a distance of 4 m., 8 m., 12 m., 16 m., 20m. and 24m. Then, the video was made by each device from mentioned distance.
The image of the car number plate was cuted from the video and placed in the table. So I get a table depending the “Resolution” from a distance. Border legibility of numbers have separated by a red frame. All that is above the red frame is considered to be distinguishable, all lower – poorly distinguishable. The shooting took place on a stationary vehicle. When the vehicle is moving the quality of the video will be worse. For greater plausibility move the red frame one step higher. It should also be understood that the tables show the best achievable result. It helps to choose the dashcam. And you do not have to expect from the dashcam more than it can do.
You can see that dashcam with FullHD (1080p) can make a video in which the number of the car is visible at a distance of up to 8 meters. The best result was shown by “Action Camera» GoPro HERO4 Black, which can be used as a dashcam.
Surprisingly, cell phone Sony Xperia S showed good resolution. This was due to the fact that the phone has autofocus and the car was stationary. In a move autofocus useless. To use the phone as a dashcam, there are special programs (not covered here). Canon IXUS 220HS can not overwrite the video files after the microSD is full and “switch on” the dashcam when the engine is started. It is has autofocus too which is useless in motion.
